These pictures showing Danish men killing whales — apparently as a rite of manhood — are being circulated on the internet, says STOMPer Dolphin.
STOMP did a check on these images and found that they depict legal hunting of pilot whales on the Danish Faroe Island. There is no evidence that whale hunting is a rite of passage ceremony for young men on this island.
The pilot whale continues to be hunted by the community for whale meat and products for the winter on Faroe Island and there is no danger of this species becoming extinct.
The islanders use the blubber for processing oil, the skin for ropes and lines, stomachs for floats and the oesophagus for shoes.
According to the hoax email that STOMPer Dolphin received::
“DENMARK: WHAT A SHAME, A SAD SCENE. THIS MAIL HAS TO BE CIRCULATED. THERE IS NO WORSE BEAST THAN MAN!!!!
“While it may seem incredible, even today this custom continues, in Dantesque, – in the Faroe Islands, ( Denmark ) . A country supposedly ‘civilized’ and an EU country at that.
“For many people this attack to life is unknown — a custom to ’show’ entering adulthood. It is absolutely atrocious. No one does anything to prevent this barbarism being committed against the Calderon, an intelligent dolphin that is placid and approaches humans out of friendliness.
“Make this atrocity known and hopefully stopped.”
