Dog urine can breed new virus strains and endanger residents

Pet owners should be slapped with fines when their pets urinate in public places such as HDB void decks, says STOMPer Mr.D, who is worried that pets’ waste can breed new virus strains in residential areas.

The situation is especially serious in a time when the threat of the H1N1 virus still lingers in the community.

In an email, STOMPer Mr. D says:

“I’m living in the Pasir Ris Estate. The past few months I’ve been noticing a rather disturbing and disgusting sight whenever I walk my kids to school.

“The school is four blocks away and everyday when I walk them to and from school I’m ‘greeted’ by the disgusting sight of dog urine.

“I hope the authorities can look into this matter as this is very unhygienic especially with the new H1N1 virus pandemic.

“This may be potential breeding ground for a new kind of virus or bacteria.

“When a person urinates in public, he’s slapped with a fine or court trial but if the person’s pet urinates, nothing happens.

“Why is this so? I recommend that if their pet commits such an act, the owners should be given a fine.”
