STOMPer Ex-singer caught the getai performance at Toh Guan Road and was struck by the huge and enthusiastic crowd. He says:
“These photos were taken at a getai show at Toh Guan Road.
“As I was passing Toh Guan Road I was attracted by a huge crowd of at least 1,000 people and the loud music emanating from a stage set in the midst of this sprawling housing estate.
“One young lady acted as the compere and she spoke in Hokkien, Mandarin and Cantonese.
“The singers came from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. Some of the singers were scantily dressed and their gyrating movements while singing attracted the crowd of elderly folks.
“They belted out the current popular hits and even the oldies of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
“The lady compere cracked some saucy jokes laced with some sexual connotations.
“The crowd consisted mainly of old ‘ah pehs’ and ‘ah erms’ who came from the HDB heartland.
“They cheered enthusiastically for the singers.”
