Noise from MRT maintenance work disturbs residents at 3am

STOMPer Vanessa is greatly distressed by the noise coming from the maintenance work along Yishun’s MRT track. What’s worse is that the works can only be carried out after MRT operating hours, and can stretch to as late as 3am.

The STOMPer, who lives in Yishun Avenue 2 near Block 752, hopes that appropriate action will be taken towards the errant contractors.

She told STOMP via email today (May 18):

“While I fully understand that maintenance works along the MRT track can only be carried out after the operating hours (late night/past midnight)

“The noise generated on May 18 between 2am till now (3.15am) is extremely loud and disturbing.

“The massive and continuous noise from the maintenance works is still ongoing.”

“What membership rights, when restaurant staff are so inflexible?”

May 18, 2009
“What membership rights, when restaurant staff are so inflexible?”

A birthday dinner at a restaurant turned sour when this STOMPer was faced with an inflexible management, which refused to give-in to her membership rights.

As a New York restaurant member, this STOMPer was entitled to a free gift upon spending a minimum of $40. The free gift had ran out of stock, and the restaurant staff refused to off set the amount from the bill and insisted she took a free dessert when she already had one.

Says this STOMPer:

“New York members are entitled to receive a complimentary gift upon spending min. $40.

“However, I now know that I have to remember to ask if there are any complimentary gifts left.

“After I made payment, I enquired about the gift.

“The waitress said she’ll check if there was such an ongoing promotion.

“How can they not know their in-house promotion when they sold their membership?

“So disappointing.

“After that, she came back and told me they ran out of gifts and they could offer a free dessert or drink.

“I told them that I’ve already had my drinks and dessert so what’s the merit of having another one?

“So I suggested, to offset the complimentary drink or dessert in the bill.

“She also said once a transaction went through, they will be unable to offset the amount.

“She told me she’ll check with her manager.

“Then, the manager confirmed that I could not offset the purchase but I could take the dessert home.

“How absurd!

“Why would anyone want to walk around with a dessert while shopping?

“She argued that she wouldn’t know it was my birthday and that there’s nothing she could do.
“That made me mad!

“How can she not know that it was my birthday when before this, the restaurant had taken my IC to verify that it was my birthday, and then deducted $15 from the total bill for the birthday promotion the restaurant had.

“That’s it. I blew my top and insisted to cancel the whole transaction and return my voucher which the restaurant manager did ultimately.”

Why no measures to stop students from eating in trains?

Why no measures to stop students from eating in trains?

This student was seen eating in the train by a STOMPer, who says that it is common for students to flout rules when travelling in the MRT.

Unhappy with the frequency that this happens, the STOMPer suggests that there should be someone in the cabins to prevent students from eating onboard.

The sender says:

“I have seen many students eating on train.

“How come there is no MRT staff there to stop them from eating in the train?”

Swensen’s outlet gives me a half-eaten tub of ice cream

STOMPer Miss You redeemed a tub of ice cream from the Plaza Singapura Swensen’s outlet for a credit card promotion, but found that the ice cream had been half-eaten.

She told STOMP today (May 18):

“I received an RBS credit card voucher that entitled me to a free ice cream if I spent more than $30 at Swensen’s.

“So I went to the Swensen’s outlet at Plaza Singapura yesterday and after spending $147, I redeemed my coffee flavoured ice cream.

“However, when I opened the tub today, I found that the ice cream had already been half-eaten.”

She said she had made a call to the outlet at about 12.15pm today, but was told that the relevant officers were out.

When STOMP spoke to her at about 2pm, she said that she had yet to receive a call from Swensen’s.

Bad feng shui makes area in Loyang accident-prone?

Bad feng shui makes area in Loyang accident-prone?

STOMPer Gatekeeper wonders if bad feng shui is the reason why many accidents occur at an area outside Loyang Valley and Loyang Industrial Estate.

The STOMPer, who saw this accident involving a Toyota SUV and a bus at about 8am this morning (May 18), said:

“A serious accident occured at 8.05am today (May 18) in Loyang Avenue (outside Loyang Valley & Loyang Industrial Estate), involving a bus and a Toyota SUV.

“The rear of the SUV was quite seriously damaged as seen from the picture.

“The accident resulted in slow-moving traffic from the TPE exit to Loyang Avenue.

“I do not know whether anyone had been injured in the accident.

“I’ve been hearing from some friends that there are always accidents at this spot, especially right outside the Loyang Valley residential area.

“Maybe the feng shui is not good?”

Sloppy contractors block a two-way street without safety precautions in Yishun

Sloppy contractors block a two-way street without safety precautions in Yishun

STOMPer Vanessa saw these contractors at about 4pm yesterday (May 17), working haphazardly near Block 737 Yishun Street 72, oblivious to the dangers they pose to the public.

She said that no safety precaution was in sight, as pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists were allowed to freely pass through the work area, without anyone controlling their movement to ensure safety.

As seen from the photos taken by the STOMPer, drivers and cyclists were forced to travel on the adjacent lane, against oncoming traffic, yet the workers went about their job without a care.

She noted that the workers were also not properly attired — with one of them clad in only a singlet and what looked like a sarong.

Driver reverses into neighbouring car — and leaves car badly parked

May 18, 2009
Driver reverses into neighbouring car — and leaves car badly parked

The driver of this black Nissan did not try to park properly even though the car had bumped into and damaged the Honda next to it, says a shocked STOMPer Random26. The Nissan was parked like that for about 30 minutes, before it was moved to another lot yesterday (May 17).

According to Random26, the Honda’s owner is apparently still unaware of the damage this morning. The STOMPer left a note on the Honda to inform the owner of what had happened.

In the STOMPer’s email:

“The incident happened before 6:30pm yesterday (May 17), just outside block 315 in Shunfu Road Estate.

“The black Nissan was parked at an angle that left its left corner planted in the rear of the gold Honda.

“A lot of people were looking at the car and surprised that the person didn’t try to move away from the scene or at least straighten the car.

“It was parked there for a good half an hour before the driver of the black Nissan drove off and parked at another lot just in front of the scene of the accident.

“Both cars had dents.

“The gold Honda is still parked at the same spot this morning. I could see a dent with black paint and scratches on its rear. I don’t think the driver is aware of the situation yet. I wrote a note and left it on his windscreen to tell him about the incident.

“The black Nissan seems to have a few scratches all around the car, so the dent it caused to itself didn’t look anything out of the ordinary.

“Hope the errant driver will pay for the damage. Have a heart, the damage looks bad.”

Teacher mocks students’ English on Facebook

Teacher mocks students’ English on Facebook

STOMPer dissapointed thinks this teacher should not be posting her students’ mistakes online for entertainment. By doing so, the teacher is just showing how incapable she is.

In the STOMPer’s email:

“what is our education system coming to?

“I’m really dissapointed with the calibre of our teachers. If I am the student and I know my teacher is posting my english mistakes all over Facebook, I will surely be discourged and humiliated.

“Why would anyone want to use examples of their students’ works to entertain people online?

“Doesn’t it reflect on how incapable a teacher you are?”

Car overturns in Bedok South: “I’ve never seen an accident like this”

Car overturns in Bedok South: “I’ve never seen an accident like this”

STOMPer Cheryl said she had seen accidents, but never like the one she saw yesterday morning (May 17) in Bedok South, which left a car overturned.

She said in an email to STOMP yesterday:

This morning, on the 17th of May, at about 9:30am, while I was driving my mother to the market, I came across one of the worst car accidents I had ever witnessed.

“I’ve personally seen back to back collisions but never one of this scale, where a car totally overturned.

“I wonder what the story behind it is.

“I hope the driver and all passengers of the overturned car are ok.”

STOMP contacted the Police and this is it’s reply:

“Police received a call on May 17 at about 9.50am, informing us of an accident between a car, a taxi and a pedestrian at the junction of Bedok South Avenue 3 and Bedok South Road.

“The two drivers and the pedestrian were conveyed conscious to CGH.

“Police investigations are ongoing.”

STOMPer Aaron also sent in photos of the same accident yesterday. His photos can be viewed below.
