So unhygienic for supermart to leave plastic bag for food products on floor

So unhygienic for supermart to leave plastic bag for food products on floor

A STOMPer couldn’t believe what he saw when he spotted clean plastic bags for customers to put their food products left on the dirty floor of Prime supermarket in Bishan.

Even though Singapore’s a first world city, says the STOMPer, people are still living like they belong in a third world country.

The contributor elaborates:

“I cant believe this, to the left there are rows of fresh sea food, and this roll of suppose-to-be clean plastic bag for us to put vegetables and food products, were left on the very, very dirty floor for long time.

“Neither the staff nor the many customers who walked pass spotted this.

“Sigh…

“After almost 50 years of moving from a post-2nd World War of a third world country, to our now so-called first world city, people living here are still not up to the our living standard.

“I spotted this at PRIME supermarket right behind the bus stop along Bishan Street 22.”

Two roaches in steamboat soup but staff says there’s nothing wrong about that

Two roaches in steamboat soup but staff says there’s nothing wrong about that

Not only was STOMPer Kohan disgusted to find two cockroaches in a steamboat pot at this restaurant, he was also appalled that the staff did not apologise for the incident but commented that it was normal to find cockroaches in food.

Instead of expressing remorse for what happened, the restaurant staff told Kohan and his friends that it was not a big deal. They also insisted that the group pay for their meal in full.

In an email dated Auguat 12, an angry STOMPer Kohan says:

“Together with six of my friends, I had steamboat at Chong Qing No.1 Steamboat restaurant, aka ‘Chong Qing Di Yi Jia Lao Huo Guo’, located at Smith Street on August 10.

“While we were eating, we were shocked to find small cockroaches in the soup. There were not only one but two cockroaches. One was bigger than the other.

“When we complained about the cockroaches to the restaurant staff, they didn’t even seem surprised.

“They simply offered us a replacement for the soup instead but we had already lost our appetite.

“What made us uncomfortable was that they didn’t even apologise. Instead, they tried to remove the evidence by taking one plate with the cockroach on it away.

“Hence we took pictures of the remaining evidence.

“When they saw that we were taking pictures, one of the staff angrily said in mandarin: ‘You can take as many pictures as you want and report this. It is common in Singapore to find cockroach in your food. You will still need to pay for all your food in full!’

“We left after paying.

“So steamboat lovers out there, beware!

“The food might be delicious but food hygiene here is very low.

“They even remarked that it’s common in Singapore to have cockroaches found in food. This shows that they really take food hygiene very lightly and are a disgrace to the Singaporean hygiene standard.

“Finding two cockroaches in the same pot of soup can’t be a coincidence.”

Cockroaches in dishes: Ah Yat restaurant fined, says NEA

Cockroaches in dishes: Ah Yat restaurant fined, says NEA

NEA says that have issued Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant in Main Grandstand Turf City with a fine following an inspection where officers found the restaurant’s kitchen to be dirty and poorly maintained.

In an earlier post date June 21, STOMPer Cath wrote in after finding two cockroaches in two out of the eight dishes she ordered at Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant in Main Grandstand Turf City. She hoped that relevant authorities would take action on the cleanliness regarding this restaurant.

In an email to STOMP today (Jul 6), a spokesperson from NEA says:

“During a routine inspection of Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant at Turf City in May 2009, we had found the kitchen dirty and poorly maintained. The operator was fined and four demerit points were imposed

“Following Ms Catherine Chia’s feedback on 21 Jun 2009, our check of the Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant at Turf City confirmed cockroach infestation at the premises. We again found the kitchen dirty and poorly maintained.

“We have taken enforcement action against the management for the lapses. The management has also been required to spruce up the premises and alert their pest control operator to exterminate the cockroaches within its premises. Ten demerit points will also be imposed for the lapses.

“Under our current regulatory regime any food shop that accumulates 12 demerit points or above within a year will have their license suspended for 2 weeks. Hence, upon conviction of these offences, the operator would have accumulated 14 demerit points. NEA would then proceed to suspend the license for two weeks, and also review its hygiene grading.

“We will continue with audit checks.”

Lot 1 stall serves soup in disgusting stained bowls

Lot 1 stall serves soup in disgusting stained bowls

Although it was dinner time on July 4, this STOMPer‘s appetite was ruined by the unhygienic standards of a Food Junction stall in Lot 1. He says that the bowl containing his food had a thick black stain in it.

Hence, he wonders how the stall managed to get a ‘B’ grading for their cleanliness levels.

The disgusted consumer says:

“I was having watercress soup dinner at Food Junction (Lot 1) on July 4.

“What terrified me was how dirty the metal bowl was. You can actually see a layer of black stain on the inner wall of the metal soup bowl.

“As a result, I lost my appetite immediately.

“Just wondering how NEA graded them in terms of hygiene level.

“This stall received a ‘B’ grade. If this stall can get a ‘B’ grade with this kind of poor hygiene, I wonder if there will be more food poisoning incidents to come.”

Mouldy strawberry on cake: Shop says go ahead and complain

Mouldy strawberry on cake: Shop says go ahead and complain

A birthday celebration turned nasty when Cin Toh realised that the birthday cake she bought for her husband was topped with a rotten strawberry. Much to her dismay, the manager of the store also challenged her to report the case to the media.

What upsets her most is that this is not the first time the sender has purchased a mouldy cake from Bengawan Solo.

Met with a lack of answers for her queries to the management, the disappointed STOMPer says that she will never patronise the shop again.

In response, Bengawan Solo has said that its staff mishandled the situation. The management apologised for the poor quality of the product purchased and believes that the situation arose due to miscommunication between its staff and the STOMPer.

In an email dated June 28, STOMPer Cin Toh says:

“It was my husband’s birthday on June 28 and also the second time I bought a mouldy cake from Bengawan Solo (Toa Payoh branch).

“The first time I encountered this, the cake was bought from the West Mall branch.

“Before I bought the cake, I asked the staff if the cake was fresh but she did not reply and when I asked again she rudely replied that the cake was freshly baked on the day itself.

“However, when we cut the cake we saw that the strawberry was mouldy.

“We contacted the person in charge but all she could say was that she would exchange the cake for us.

“She also mentioned that we could go ahead and complain to the newspapers. What kind of customer service is this?

“Bengawan Solo, you have just officially lost a customer and we will definitely spread the word to our family and friends.”

Read Bengawan Solo’s full response here:

“We had spoken with the STOMPer’s son upon receipt of his email this morning.

“We apologised for the quality of the product purchased, for the way our staff mishandled the situation and explained how it could have happened.

“There could have been a miscommunication between the STOMPer and our staff at the point of contact.
“Nevertheless, our staff did apologise and offered to replace the cake at any outlet.
“Further to that, during our conversation with the STOMPer earlier, we have additionally offered to replace the product with any other product of her choice and at her convenience.

“As strawberries in particular are a highly sensitive fruit, we arrange for them to be delivered to us fresh everyday, 7 days a week.

“Since we do not use any artificial preservatives in any of our products, we are especially careful in the handling of our strawberries.
“We use about 1600 of them a day, and each strawberry is individually checked and coated with glazing gel to retain its freshness before being used to decorate the cakes.

“After our investigation, we found that the mould on the strawberry could have possibly developed due to an incomplete coating of the strawberry with the gel.

“We deeply regret that this happened and have stepped up checks to ensure that all fruits are properly coated before being placed on the cakes.
“We sincerely apologise for this lapse in quality and service as well as the distress caused to the STOMPer and her family. We truly appreciate her kind understanding and have settled the matter amicably.”

2 cockroaches found in 2 different dishes

An angry STOMPer found 2 cockroaches in 2 dishes out of the 8 they ordered at Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant in Main Grandstand Turf City this morning.

She hopes that the relevant authorities will take action on the cleanliness regarding this restaurant.

STOMPer Cath told STOMP via email today (Jun 21):

“I want to express my anger to this lousy restaurant for serving us ‘superb’ dim sum and services.

“In total, we ordered 8 dim sum, and 2 of them were served with cockroaches!

“What the hell, I found the 1st one on the pumpkin dumpling.

“Oh my God, there was a cockroach lying on the dumpling basket.

“We called the waiter, and his response was to immediately take away the dumpling without any apology about it.

“Subsequently, my friend ate the chicken claw and inside it, he found another cockroach!

“We were so damn frustrated and called upon the manager to give us an explanation on the 2 cockroaches found on 2 dishes.

“The manager just replied that he will feedback this case to his superior.

“People do not pay money to be served with dirty food in restaurants!”

Yucks! I found cold hard skin in my cheese potato

A STOMPer found a piece of cold hard skin in the cheese potato side dish which was packed from Botak Jones and lost her appetite for lunch.

In an email to STOMP today (June 15), the STOMPer recounted:

“My colleague brought back lunch for me and for one of the side dishes, I chose cheese potato because I usually have that there.

“But when I had just taken two bites, I put my spoon in and hit something hard.

“It was cold and smelled funny.

“My friend suspected that it is part of the potato skin and they cooked it.

“But I was so disturbed by it that I stopped eating.”

Excuse me, I didn’t order cooked insect for lunch

STOMPer Soo certainly did not order a cooked insect for lunch, but that was exactly what he found in his mixed vegetable rice today (June 4).

He said:

“I bought a pack of mixed vegetable rice from Lee Kwang Kee at Clementi Central food centre today.

“When I reached the office and proceeded to eat, I found a large cooked insect that looked like a fly or an ant.

“It resembled the black beans in the long bean dish.”

AVA graded them A, but there’s a housefly on my drink!

A STOMPer was at the McDonald’s in Bukit Panjang Plaza, when a housefly landed on his drink. Should AVA give this outlet a lower grade for that?

The STOMPer says:

“Housefly found in outlet graded A by AVA!

“Other outlets also same thing.
“Old AMK McDonald’s I go got cockroaches.”
